Music Therapy Services

Music therapy is not only well-placed to support children in their speech and global development, but also to provide a wealth of resources to aid your child in symbolic and emotionally-rich play. This can give them a much-needed outlet for expression with or without words. Children who are exhibiting severe behavioural difficulties may be going through internal trauma that they do not know how to talk about and musical play can be invaluable in helping them to process it.

Although MdC Music Therapy only offers music therapy services for children on a case-by-case basis at the moment due to the current pandemic, we also work alongside other music therapy services who provide exclusive music therapy care for children. If you would like to make a referral, please download and fill in our referral form and return to us at: referrals@mdcmusictherapy.com.

Music in therapy can be used in a variety of ways to support wellbeing, mood regulation, communication and self-exploration. Music therapy with adults is primarily offered as a kind of music psychotherapy where themes, concerns and psychological and emotional issues are addressed through both musical and verbal means. This includes playing music together in free improvisation, utilising songwriting techniques to uncover deep-seated feelings, using music as a communication tool between therapist and client, and the verbal discussion of all of the above and more.

Some adults who find verbal communication difficult, for example because of feeling withdrawn or suffering from mental health conditions such as psychosis, may find engaging with the music particularly helpful. Music could provide a form of communication that words simply fail to do.

If you would like to explore music therapy for yourself or for a loved one, please download and fill in our referral form and send it back to us at referrals@mdcmusictherapy.com. We look forward to working with you.

MdC Music Therapy is certified by The Foundation for Infant Loss to offer support to women and families who have gone through the unspeakable anguish of infant loss during pregnancy or after childbirth. Music in therapy can be very powerful in helping women and families to express the pain they are feeling – a pain for which there is often no words.

We are otherwise not offering music therapy services to families at the moment due to the current pandemic. However, if you would like music therapy for your entire family, please get in touch with us and we would be very happy to let you know when we may be restarting our service or to refer you to one of our trusted colleagues.

Fee: £90 for a 60-minute session (package rates available)

Playing music together is a very important component of what many music therapists see as music therapy. In our current situation when we cannot come together face-to-face like we did before, it is more important than ever that we as creative therapists continue to nurture our creativity and use it to serve our clients with empathy and transparency. We are all living and working in unprecedented ways and at MdC Music Therapy, I am committed to keeping my heart and mind open to finding the best ways of supporting you safely, through online platforms.

This may be through active music listening during sessions, encouraging you to explore any instruments you might have, listening to you and responding musically, but making sure that through it all, I am alongside you as your therapist to help you find your inner resources to manage both the crisis happening outside, and any crises that may be happening inside.

If the pandemic and extended lockdowns are leaving you with a lot of stress, pressure and anxiety, and you think the unique combination of musical and psychotherapeutic support during this time is something that you think could make a difference in your life, please get in touch. I will get back to you as soon as I can with a plan to begin some online work. For rates and more information, please email us

Stay safe.

Online Music Therapy

Are you in need of some psychological or therapeutic support but are perhaps finding it hard to commit financially or emotionally to long-term therapy? Is this something that you would like to explore through verbal and musical therapy? Perhaps you are unsure if music therapy is the right way to go for you. Or perhaps the pandemic is causing some emotional upheaval which you really need to work through but you simply do not have the means to go all in at the moment?

There are many ways in which long-term and ongoing therapy can be meaningful, supportive and helpful in our lives. However, there are also many ways in which intensive, short-term blocks of music therapy can be useful in considering the way we communicate and connect with ourselves and others and in opening the door to begin thinking about personal growth and change.

In 2021 MdC Music Therapy is offering a 12-week semi-structured music therapy programme which will act as an introduction to music therapy, and a source of mental health support, as well as a guide to more emotional and psychologically-minded thinking. The full online programme costs £600 (@ £50 per session, U.P. £65) and an instalment plan can be negotiated. The 50-minute sessions will run weekly on an agreed online platform (Zoom or Skype) and will be offered to individual clients 16 years of age and older. Although it would be good to have your own musical instruments, it is not necessary.
